Bethany House first opened in the fall of 2008. We had stayed in several Bed & Breakfast locations. We'd tried regular chain motels, cottages, cabins, lodges, and others but nothing is quite like home is it? We recognized the need for alternative lodging in Butler and a quaint house at 510 North Water literally caught our eye with its large covered porch. It was an older home in a quiet neighborhood that had been totally redone inside and out. We loved it instantly and thought others would too, so we purchased and decorated the house to provide a relaxing, peaceful, quiet respite. It is decorated in subdued tones of blues and tans, with oil paintings and nature in mind: birds, leaves, squirrels. We are often told how "homey" it feels and we have tried to provide all the comforts of home from a: fuzzy housecoat, wine opener, cookie sheet, lotion, shower cap, to a deck of cards. In 2012 we were able to purchase some adjoining property to enlarge the yard, parking area, and make a circle drive.
We didn't advertise to start with and relied on "word of mouth" which is a pretty powerful thing in a town of 4000-5000. In a few years we began needing to say "Sorry, we are already booked" more than we wanted to and decided perhaps we should look for another location. We found 202 South Water and since it was smaller, we quickly began referring to it as "the cottage." However, we decided it needed a little more space so we added on a master bath and walk in closet.. We discovered a great piece of oak furniture at a local shop called Vintage 49 that would be a perfect place for a guest book. The knobs were like four leaf clovers and having a Irish heritage, one thing led to another and we decided to include some Celtic décor. There isn't much Celtic in a small mid-west farming community but......Ta Dah! Internet, www.com at your service! It has been so fun to search for items to include in the cottage and we have tried to bring a little more fun, light hearted atmosphere to the Cottage, over the peace and cozy feeling of Bethany House. Which ever you choose, be assured, it is all for your comfort and your enjoyment. We want you to feel at
"home, away from home."
